From McGarvey, J.W., Sermons delivered in Louisville, Kentucky (Cincinnati: Standard Publishing Company, no date), first published 1894. A sermon delivered by J.W. McGarvey at the Broadway Christian Church, Lexington, KY, 11 June 1893. J.W. (John William) McGarvey (1829-1911) was one of the leading ministers and religious educators of the American Restoration Movement.
Having established the problem of sin in his sermons Sin and its Punishment and Sin and its Punishment: Objections Considered, McGarvey turns next to the question of atonement. The basic questions considered are: 1) How did God pardon sin without minimizing its seriousness? 2) How did Christ's death on the cross bring about that pardon? 3) What is the practical result for our lives? McGarvey's answers are insightful and rather surprising.
